Why remove an Oil Tank?

Underground Oil Tanks are more or less an obsolete technology at this point. Very few homes still utilize them. The reality is that if an oil tank is still sitting in the ground, it likely has corroded significantly after decades of exposure to water and soil. Once the corrosion process of the oil tanks out metal casing reaches a certain point, the contents of the tank--old oil--begins to seep out into the soul and the water in the area. As you can imagine, this isn't a pretty picture as petrochemicals take a very long time to properly be metabolized by the earth. So the first reason is the environmental one.

The second reason is an economic reason and that's that if you currently have an oil

The third reason is more or less a legal reason: if an underground oil tank has leaked at any point, a homeowner is responsible to file a
notice of residual petroleum to the State of North Carolina. Unfortunately, until the tank is removed and the soil remediated, the property cannot be sold or transferred until it's taken care of. We won't get into the details too much here for the sake of time, but essentially, having an underground oil tank on your property is a liability for the property and you as the owner. The principle issue at hand is that an oil tank can create environmental toxicity and waste on your property and that's simply not a good thing.

However! That said, there are solutions at hand. The first step is to give us a call and we can make arrangements to remove the oil tank. We've done hundreds and hundreds of oil tank removals here in Asheville and we've been in service for a decade and a half. That's a lot of experience and you can trust us throughout the process to be clear communicators about what needs to happen in your oil tank removal process and how it will happen.

How Does Oil Tank Removal Work?

The first step is to come out and inspect the site. Once we have a go-ahead and a clear path forward, we dig and check out the tank's condition.

Pumping Out Old Oil:

Then, from there, we begin to pump out the old oil and liquid inside. Sometimes there is a considerable amount, sometimes there is very little. We then dispose of the oil in a certified, appropriate facility. Once the old oil is removed, the lingering threat of the oil tank is somewhat neutralized. But we still need to remove it to inspect the soil underneath to determine whether there has been leaking at any point. We also take time to ensure that the tank is appropriately cleaned.

Oil Tank Removal
Once the tank is removed, we can tell clearly based on the tank's current conditions and the soil around whether there was leaking and contamination, or not. In Asheville, sometimes there's leaking and sometimes not; it really depends on the age of the home and the tank.

Oil Tank Disposal
Once the tank is removed, we haul the tank off and dispose of it properly at a scrap yard where the metal can be re-purposed in the future.
The whole idea here is to minimize environmental pollution and to reuse the resources of an old, obsolete technology.

Underground Oil Tank Removal

It's important to note that sometimes oil tanks were buried underground and sometimes they were left above ground. Both can be an issue, it ultimately just depends whether the tank is corroding or not. If you have an underground oil tank, odds are it's in trouble and at the very least, needs to be inspected. From there, we can make an informed decision. If the tank is an above ground oil tank, of course, it can be corroded as well, but obviously it's much easier to see visible damage on an above-ground tank. So! In either case, we want to ensure that the metal is in good condition and is not leaking.
